You Can Start To Win At Any Time

Indeed we can start to win at anytime if only we have the determination to really win too. Someone said that to solve any problem or to reach your goal, you don't need to know all the answers in advance. But you must have a clear idea of the problem or the goal you want to reach.

All you have to do is know where you're going. The answers will come to you of their own accord. Don't procrastinate when faced with a big difficult problem, break the problem into parts, and handle one part at a time.

If you can get up the courage to begin, you have the courage to succeed. It's the job you never start that takes the longest to finish. Don't worry about what lies dimly at a distance, but do what lies clearly ahead.

Your biggest opportunity is where you are right now. Once you begin you're half done. when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody You want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.

What's the Secret of Success?

Success does not come so easily therefore we need to sweat a little, word hard a little and be patient for it a little. Here, let me share to you a very impressive poem from an an author who is yet unknown to me. This is his way of expressing what's really the secret of success.

"Takes pain," said the window.
"Keep cool," said the ice.
"Drive hard," said the hammer.
"Be up to date," said the calender.
"Never be led," said the pencil.
"Be sharp," said the knife.
"Make light around you," said the fire.
"Stick to it," said the glue.
"Be bright," said the lamp.

The Real Power

I found this story so amazing. It touches me and hopefully it will on you. Neil Eskelin from Daily Jump Start brilliantly wrote this to open our eyes on what is really real power.

Simon Smith made it big in the department store business, with facilities in several states. At the grand opening of a new mall that included one of his stores, a reporter asked for an interview. "What do you believe is the most important personal characteristic that has led to your success," the journalist asked.

"It's will power. That's the main reason for my achievement," answered Smith.

"Could you explain that for me?" the reporter asked.

"Sure," the executive smiled. "My father died and in his will he left the entire department store to me!"

Well, that's not the kind of will power used by most people to make it to the summit. I'm not knocking wealth, but the real satisfaction comes from what we create ourselves, not something handed to us on a polished silver tray.

Business leader B. C. Forbes, observed, "Our future and our fate lie in our wills more than in our hands, for our hands are but the instruments of our wills."

Regardless of the magnitude of the task, tackle it with all of your heart, soul and mind.

Secret of Success

So many tried to define success. Geniuses tried to study the formula to this but somehow I would say it is all up to you. Below is one of my favorites from an unknown, read it and you may love it the way I do.

"Sir, What is the secret of your success?" a reporter asked a bank president.

"Two words"

"And, Sir,what are they?"

"Right decisions."

"And how do you make right decisions?"

"One word."

"And,sir,What is that?"

"Experience."

"And how do you get Experience ?"

"Two words"

"And, Sir,what are they?"

"Wrong decisions"

One Step

Guess what, this might hurt a bit to those who are really hit by the truth but somehow we need to face the truth to succeed. So, listen!

Foolish people with all their other thoughts, have this one too: They are always getting ready to live, but never living.

Your success will start when you begin to pursue it. To reach your goal or to attain success, you don't need to know all of the answers in advance. You just need to have a clear idea of what your goal is.

Don't procrastinate when faced with difficult problems. Break your problems into parts, and handle one part at a time.

Develop tendencies toward taking action. You can make something happen right now. Divide your big plan into small steps and take that first step right away.

Everyone who ever got where they are had to begin where they were. Your big opportunity is where you are right now.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. Take it

Five Short Chapters on Change

You might be too busy now chasing wealth. Hold on. Relax a bit and read this one I am about to share to you from an unknown author.

"Chapter 1.
I walk down a street and there's a deep hole in the sidewalk. I fall in. It takes forever to get out. It's my fault.

Chapter 2.
I walk down the same street. I fall in the hole again. It still takes a long time to get out. It's not my fault.

Chapter 3.
I walk down the same street. I fall in the hole again. It's becoming a habit. It is my fault. I get out immediately.

Chapter 4.
I walk down the same street and see the deep hole in the sidewalk. I walk around it.

Chapter 5.
I walk down a different street."

Change

Anthony de Mello, SJ, One Minute Wisdom, has his way of sharing stories on trials and tribulations behind success. Let me share it to you then.

The visiting historian was disposed to be argumentative.
"Do not our efforts change the course of human history?" he demanded.
"Oh yes, they do," said the Master.
"And have not our human labors changed the earth?"
"They certainly have," said the Master.
"Then why do you teach that human effort is of little consequence?"
Said the Master, "Because when the wind subsides, the leaves still fall."

Balance

Have you read Brian Cavanaugh's The Sower's Seeds? Here is a portion of his work tha may delight you.

Once the great Anthony of the Desert was relaxing with his disciples outside his hut when a hunter came by. The hunter was surprised to see Anthony relaxing, and rebuffed him for taking it easy. It was not his idea of what a holy monk should be doing.

Anthony replied, "Bend your bow and shoot an arrow." And the hunter did so. "Bend it again and shoot another arrow," said Anthony. The hunter did so, again and again.

The hunter finally said, "Abba Anthony, if I keep my bow always stretched, it will break."

So it is with the monk," replid Anthony. "if we push ourselves beyond measure, we will break. It is right from time to time to relax our efforts."

Count Your Blessings

Here is another collection, an inspirational story from Charley Mard. I like this one, very appealing. Tell me what's your say then!

What a day I said to myself as I jumped out of bed with glee. Today was the day I planned to go and cut my Christmas Tree. I wonder what I'll get this year, as I lugged it from a far. Maybe a watch or a real big ring or even a brand new car. I guess I better bake and clean and there's stockings I have to stuff. The time is short and moneys scarce and I never have enough. All these people coming over which gives me a lot of work. They never help and some complain about some silly quirk.

While in the store, I saw a boy who appeared to be really sad. He's got it made that silly kid, no work just fun to be had. He looks at me and I say, "You seem a little down today. Haven't you picked out your favourite toy? Why aren't you smiling and having fun like a normal little boy? His words stung deep as he lifted his head and from his eye a tear, "I've picked it out but hope is gone and I'm afraid that Santa won't hear. I always loved this time of year for Santa always came. But now it won't mean as much to me or ever be the same. My dad left Mom and me years ago when I was very small. So I don't remember Christmas with him being there at all. But Mom and me we always laughed and put up the Christmas tree. Mom passed away this year and now there's only me."

I hung my head in deep regret because of my thoughts you see, because I wanted most of all for folks to think of me. Why couldn't I have the things I wanted as I worked real hard all year. I deserved those rings and a brand new car and something new to wear. Now I discovered more precious gifts than I had never seen. They now became more valuable to me than they had ever been. My friends and family were right beside me to help at any time. I asked God to forgive me, how could I be so blind. When I get up each morning now I thank the Lord above. Who knows how long they will be there to shower me with love. A lesson was learned this year as I prepared for Christmas day. No more asking for me but to be thankful when I pray!

The Power of "PERHAPS"

This is written by Anita Foley.

Do you find that every time you think about making a change in your life you sabotage yourself by thinking it is unlikely that you'll be able to do it? Do all the negative, self-limiting thoughts come to the forefront and stop you in your tracks? You must learn to change these self-imposed limitations that are preventing you from reaching your potential. Then you can transform your life and achieve your dreams.

An unlikelihood CAN become a possibility, which can lead to a probability, if you use the power of PERHAPS. You can use this simple word to change your negative beliefs into possibilities; and that is the first step toward changing them into probabilities.

Remember when you were a kid and you asked your parents if you could have something? If their answer was "No, you can't," you knew there wasn't much chance you'd get it. But, if their answer was, "Perhaps, we'll see," it usually meant you'd be able to convince them.

The word PERHAPS left the door open to negotiation; it meant there was a POSSIBILITY that you'd get what you'd asked for. All you had to do was be persistent from that point on and you would probably get what you wanted. There's POWER in the word PERHAPS.

You can use the power of PERHAPS today, also, just like when you were a kid.

How?

By using the word PERHAPS in place of the words I CAN'T and I WON'T.

Let's say, for example, you have a belief that you can't do math. Either you did poorly in the subject when you were in school (internal belief from past experience) or someone told you that you were not good in math (external belief). What would happen if you simply changed "I can't do math" to "PERHAPS I can do math"? The word PERHAPS opens up the belief to other possibilities. It allows for some action to be taken that could result in a change in the belief. "PERHAPS I can do math if I . . ."

- get a tutor
- take a class
- study harder
- concentrate more
- buy some math software
- work with numbers more often
- read a math textbook

Instead of just giving in to a negative belief, you are open to taking some ACTION that will help you change the belief. "I CAN'T do math" can become "PERHAPS I can do math if I take some action" and then become "I CAN probably do math".

Likewise, "I WON'T make money with an online business" becomes "PERHAPS I can make money with an online business if I start one and work at it" to "I CAN probably make money with an online business." Do you see how changing that one word will change the whole feeling of the belief?

Use the word PERHAPS to change your negative beliefs to possibilities that invite ACTION and, ultimately, to positive beliefs and probabilities.

Think about the potential outcome for your changed beliefs. Changing your negative beliefs is the first step in the transformation process that will really make a difference in your life. What are your possibilities?

Achievement of Goals

Here is an inspiring story of success in real life by Catherine Pulsifer.

For 26 years, I worked for a major corporation in Toronto, Ontario. While I had a wonderful career working with some great people, for the last five years of that career I found myself wanting a change. However, my financial circumstances did not allow me to leave my job.

But, I had my goals - to own our own small business, to live in the country, basically to change our lifestyle. But, of course, I faced challenges in achieving these goals. I can't tell you how many times I felt frustrated. I felt like I was going further away from my goals rather than moving towards them.

Our original goal to change our lifestyle was based on a two-year plan. Without going into the detail of the setbacks, that two-year plan turned into a reality taking five years. So how did we survive those three years of setbacks?

- We never lost focus on our goals. Even though the time frame changed, we kept taking the actions shown in our plan.

- In my case, on my desk in my office, a place that I did not want to be, I kept a quote that I would read every day - "Enjoy where you are at, while you are waiting to get to where you want to be!"- That quote reminded me to stay positive, not to become depressed about my situation. My goals, even with the setbacks, gave me hope and determination.

- I would often visualize what it would be like if I was living my goals rather than working towards them. With every positive mental picture, it reinforced that my goals could be a reality.

Finally, five years later, our goal became a reality. We quit our jobs in Toronto, we bought a house in the country, and we moved to Clairville, NB. And, we started our small business. I no longer needed to keep looking at the saying, "Enjoy where you are at, while you are waiting to get to where you want to be!"

We were where we wanted to be - in the country, running our own small business. There was just one problem. Our small business was not generating enough income to support us. The first year in business, our small business cost us more money than it made. With our savings dwindling, we knew we had two choices:

1. go back to work for someone else, or,

2. make our small business profitable.

With 26 years of working for a large corporation, we did not want to go back to work for someone else. We were determined to make our small business profitable.

There was one day in particular, I will always remember, I was feeling a bit down, almost defeated. I was updating the website and came across a quote. As I read the quote, I realized I could do it. The quote, that pulled me out of my slump, goes like this:
"PERSISTENCE - "persistence prevails when all else fails."

We remember reflecting back on our previous two-year goal that ended up being a five-year goal. We were persistent then, we just need to be persistent now. So we took a step back, we reassessed what and how we were running our small business. We changed, we worked hard and long, but we are happy to say that our small business is now generating an income for us.

Our work is now displayed at many stores across Atlantic Canada, at the cruise ship booth located at the Port of Saint John.

My point in sharing our story with you is that no matter what your goals are, no matter what setbacks you face, never lose your focus on your goals. Your goals can become your reality. It may take some changes, and it will take some work, but if you stick with them, taking action, if you are persistent, you can achieve them. We are living proof.

What Is The Value Of Money?

Money we all know is a medium of exchange
Buyers and sellers relate to each other through money
The question here is – what is the value of money?
Few say money is the root of all evil
Many say money is the root of prosperity
And how valuable is money
Almost everything is measured by money
People go to work everyday because of money
Wealth of individuals is measured by money
All purchases and transactions are made by money
Every country has a name for its own money
The importance of some countries
In based on the value of their money
What is the value of money?
The rise and fall of foreign exchange
Is used to measure the value of money
Success to many is also measured by money
Corporate positions are measured by money
There are some people who marry for money
What is the value of money?
To many, money is everything
You cannot get many things done without money
Many have pondered and contemplated to ask
Can human beings live without money?
Then, how shall we determine and decide
The prices of individuals and materials
Differences between the rich and the poor
Are calculated in monetary terms
The power bestowed by money
Seems bigger than imagined

Success...

The Collins English dictionary defines the word “Success” as: “the favorable outcome of something attempted.”

So, “success” is when we attempt to perform some action or reach some goal, and we achieve it successfully! The other things we’ve mentioned, wealth, fame, material possessions, are merely outward results of doing something successfully – and success means different things to different people!

The problem with the definition we almost always place upon the word “success”, is ,that it can make some people feel “inferior “ and that they’re not a successful person. It can make them feel frustrated, dissatisfied with their lives, but with the kind of dissatisfaction that immobilizes them, and they become even more negative.

An author once said about the word “success”: “If you can read or write, and tie your shoe laces, you’re a success.”

In reality, the potential for “success” is within each of us. The trick is, to tap into your potential, but then, to have a sound understanding of what “success” really is, as we defined it earlier.

Don’t get sucked in by the media’s view, and definition of what success is. In real terms, success has more to do with who you are as a person, not with what your status in life might appear to be!

Expert Shares TEN TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL BLOGGING

Most successful bloggers can offer some tips for successful blogging. Some people develop methods based on experience. Others simply offer what they’ve been told like post often, link often, and be yourself (once identified as the three cardinal rules for successful blogging). What follows are my ten tips for achieving a popular and successful blog within your industry, whatever it may be.

Be Real

Knowing yourself and your audience are extremely important aspects of successful blogging. Too many bloggers start out trying to blog about everything that interests them and, in doing so, quickly burn out, largely because there is simply too much to blog about when you blog about everything. Identify who you are as a blogger, what you’ll be blogging about, and who your audience will be; these are key to a successful blog.

Be Passionate

Passion breeds passion. If you aren’t enjoying what you’re blogging about, it’s difficult to be passionate, so blog about things you truly enjoy. Find a voice that you enjoy writing in and stick with it. The passion that comes from writing a blog and connecting with dozens, hundreds, or thousands of readers is contagious.

Write Often

Writing often isn’t just good for the blog, it’s an absolute requirement for success. Anything less than once a day (during weekdays) is abandoning the potential of your blog. Updating your blog is often rooted in two major facets of blogging: search engine “juice” and the fact that readers love new and fresh content. Search engines love fresh content and will revisit your site more often the more it’s updated. The result is that your blog will get searched regularly and will carry more weight with the search engines once they trust your ever-changing content. Link Lots

Links are called the “currency of the blogosphere.” Most bloggers link for one of two reasons: either they are interested in the subject matter or they respect the blogger to whom they are linking. Links carry an inherent value, so providing links shows your readers and users what interests you and the higher the quality of bloggers to whom you link, the more respect readers and other bloggers will have for you and your blog. Combine that with the ability for bloggers to find out who links to them via services such as Technorati and PubSub, and you can see how a link can be a great way to show who you know and to let people know that you exist. Many of the top bloggers I know have confessed that the way they most often find new blogs is after those blogs link to them.

Leave Comments on Other Blogs

Creating a community of interest is key to blogging successfully at the business or personal level. For most businesses, the community will be a mixture of existing bloggers, news sources, and influential people in the industry, combined with employees, partners, suppliers, and customers. Your community of interest is the community in which you are interested as well as the community that is interested in you. By commenting on blogs in your community of interest, you are letting existing bloggers, and their readers, know that your blog might be of interest to them. One of the most common ways that people find new blogs is through links in comments get involved, and you’ll reap the traffic rewards and build relationships with other bloggers and their readers.

Have Fun

Blogging is meant to be fun. Yes, it’s serious business that will radically change the way your business is presented online while also changing the way your customers view and relate to you, but it’s also about having fun. Try new things and link to fun and interesting sites.

Push the Envelope

One of the challenges with blogging is that it’s new. Try something unusual, and if you do the “wrong” thing, it will get you some attention (bad or good). Any new communications tool that remains stagnant ultimately dies, so don’t be afraid to make changes and ask questions. Entirely new types of cutting-edge communication, such as podcasting and video blogging, were created when someone asked, “Why does blogging have to be just text?” Ask your own “why” questions and see if you can come up with exciting ways to use blogs.

Ping

Pinging is something your blog software does to tell several services that you’ve posted something new. This quick note, or ping, is used to produce lists of the most recently updated blogs to let Technorati and PubSub know to come by and see what you’ve posted and generally to make sure the blogosphere stays connected. If you ping only one service, make it Ping-O-Matic (www .pingomatic.com). This neat, and free, little tool by the creators of WordPress (www.wordpress.org) allows you to ping Ping-O-Matic, which then pings all of the most important services for you, instead of you having to do it. This cuts down on your effort, but it also means you don’t need to worry about whether you’re pinging the right places. Ping-O-Matic takes care of it for you.

Use Feeds

Whether you choose to use full-text feeds or provide some of the text, make sure you are providing feeds. I’m a big fan of full-text feeds, because they create less of a boundary for your customers to read your ideas. Feeds make it easy for people to read your content on their own schedules while traveling on an airplane, via audio as they’re driving home, or generally however and whenever they want to hear what you have to say. Feeds are all about lowering the barriers to getting at quality information, so do whatever you can to make sure you aren’t putting up any artificial barriers.

Create Meaningful Titles

Titles are absolutely essential to blogging successfully: good titles mean search engines find you and send you more traffic; attractive and useful titles entice readers to read your stuff, and this translates into more links. Every blog post title should give readers a reason to want to read the entire post. If you own a fashion company, for example, “Exquisite shoes” is probably a bad title, while “Ferragamo designs exquisite shoes!” is far more descriptive.

The 3 Must Know Secrets to Making Money With Blogs

Let me share to you what Ian McConnell has written on the secrets of making money with blogs. Read it for yourself!

In the few minutes it takes you to read this article, hundreds of new blogs will be created and thousands upon thousands of posts will have been made world wide.

The information age we live in, has allowed everyone, from the local teenager to large corporations to jump on to the blogging wagon.

The lure of being able to have a blog installed in under 15 minutes, the incredibly low start-up costs, and the ability to post to that blog from any computer with internet access, has provided many people and corporations with an immediate web presence.

Stories are common place about full time bloggers earning over $100,000 a year while blogging for less than 2 hours a day. And they usually do this while traveling the world!

The most popular blog type for the newbie is one that documents their everyday lives, ramblings and opinions. They use it as a way to express themselves.

Each new blog post generates content which the search engines absolutely love. The conversational and informal nature of blogs usually provides great reading. Readers have the option to easily comment on the posts, providing feedback and their opinions.

Blogs become interactive and service the needs of writers and readers. Video and audio can now easily be inserted on blogs providing a different experience for all its readers.

All blogs can be monetized with advertising, selling affiliate products or selling your own products. A blog with a great readership will attract high paying advertisers often paying for 6 months advertising in advance.

However, similar to any small business, the abandonment rate of blogs is incredibly high. Bloggers often enjoy the initial novelty of blogging, but if they started blogging to make some extra income, the novelty will wear off quickly if the results don't look promising.

Here are three secrets which virtually guarantee success for any blogger:

The First Secret:

A blog must be tightly themed around a niche, with posts that provide benefits for its readers.

If your blog posts do not provide significant value for your readers, they will not return to read any other posts. Remember blogs make money from its readers, so your content must keep them coming back.

Don't make the common mistake of blogging about anything and everything. If someone is reading your gardening blog, they have an interest in gardening. If you start blogging about the new car you just bought, you may lose that reader. They want to read about gardening, not cars.

Your readers are reading your posts with a "what's in it for me" mindset and if its not satisfied they will go somewhere else to find it.

Your blog is similar to an online magazine in many ways, just more informal and updated regularly.

The Second Secret:

Your blog must load fast, look the part and be easy to navigate. When your new readers arrive they should know within 5 seconds which niche you are targeting.

First impressions are everything!

It is very easy to use the default template in any blogging platform, but it will do nothing for your reader's experience. Look around at the successful blogs and you will find customized themes designed to suit their niche.

Customized themes will cost you less than $100 but this is money very well spent, as it will improve your readers experience ten-fold. And make sure you check your blog in various browsers not just Internet Explorer. A blog that looks fantastic in Internet Explorer could look terrible in other browsers.

The Third Secret:

Continuously generate targeted traffic to your blog. A great looking blog with quality content is not worth anything to anyone without consistent and targeted traffic to it.

You need to continuously promote your blog to attract visitors.

With its incredible speed, power and coverage the internet can distribute a blog post around the world in seconds. A good looking blog fulfilling the needs, wants and desires of its readers can quickly become an authority site in its niche providing the owner with a very healthy income.

The Importance Of Blogging Online

Blogs are establishing themselves as a new and original media form. Blogs are instant publishing tools that allow you to easily update your content, create relationships and build trust with your target audience. They can also be a very easy way to make money according to the author, Canuckbob, of this interesting issue. It's very easy to get a high PR profile in a short amount of time with a blog. Blogs are a really great way for a newbie to make some money because you don't need an initial financial investment, just time.

Blogs are not just for press releases, product updates, or company news. They are informal, yet structured, Web sites where individuals and corporations can publish stories, opinions and links, often daily. Blog means web-log and most blogs are started as online journals.
It is common for blogs to feature advertisements either for the financial benefit of the blogger, or to promote the blogger's favorite causes. Blogging has the ability to establish people as experts on niche topics and we all know the value of being perceived as an expert.

It has acquired the status of a full fledged industry as many bloggers have built fortunes by blogging. Blogging seems to be one of the best hard earned, legitimate online money-making ideas. It has also become a very good way of informing people about what's going on. Blogging is growing in importance, and at a minimum, companies should monitor blogs to learn what is being said about their products and services.

Bloggers also make money by engaging the readers and asking them to comment. Bloggers were among the first to realize, and in many cases successfully capitalize on the brand that their name and content had become. Bloggers and analysts said companies that want to blog should identify a specific reason to do so, such as to humanize the company, make the company more open or advance the fun-and-happy company image. Bloggers go where the mainstream media fear to tread.

Personal bloggers usually take pride in their blog posts, even if their blog is never read by anyone but them. Gartner analysts expect that the novelty value of the medium will wear off as most people who are interested in the phenomenon have checked it out, and new bloggers will offset the number of writers who abandon their creation out of boredom. One area of concern is the issue of bloggers releasing proprietary or confidential information. Several cases have been brought before the national courts against bloggers concerning issues of defamation or liability.

Blogs are natural search engine magnets, but you also need to understand the importance of using the right keywords, in headlines and when writing content that markets your business. Blogs are a good place to speak candidly with a conversational style. Blogs are, in their purest form, the core of what has come to be called personal publishing. They are the leading edge of what is often called Web 2. Bottom line is blogs are still the "new way" to communicate.

Wealth and Power

Making wealth is not the only way to get rich according to one of the experts in the field. For most of human history it has not even been the most common. Until a few centuries ago, the main sources of wealth were mines, slaves and serfs, land, and cattle, and the only ways to acquire these rapidly were by inheritance, marriage, conquest, or confiscation. Naturally wealth had a bad reputation.

Two things changed. The first was the rule of law. For most of the world's history, if you did somehow accumulate a fortune, the ruler or his henchmen would find a way to steal it. But in medieval Europe something new happened. A new class of merchants and manufacturers began to collect in towns. Together they were able to withstand the local feudal lord. So for the first time in our history, the bullies stopped stealing the nerds' lunch money. This was naturally a great incentive, and possibly indeed the main cause of the second big change, industrialization.

A great deal has been written about the causes of the Industrial Revolution. But surely a necessary, if not sufficient, condition was that people who made fortunes be able to enjoy them in peace. One piece of evidence is what happened to countries that tried to return to the old model, like the Soviet Union, and to a lesser extent Britain under the labor governments of the 1960s and early 1970s. Take away the incentive of wealth, and technical innovation grinds to a halt.

Remember what a startup is, economically: a way of saying, I want to work faster. Instead of accumulating money slowly by being paid a regular wage for fifty years, I want to get it over with as soon as possible. So governments that forbid you to accumulate wealth are in effect decreeing that you work slowly. They're willing to let you earn $3 million over fifty years, but they're not willing to let you work so hard that you can do it in two. They are like the corporate boss that you can't go to and say, I want to work ten times as hard, so please pay me ten times a much. Except this is not a boss you can escape by starting your own company.

The problem with working slowly is not just that technical innovation happens slowly. It's that it tends not to happen at all. It's only when you're deliberately looking for hard problems, as a way to use speed to the greatest advantage, that you take on this kind of project. Developing new technology is a pain in the ass. It is, as Edison said, one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration. Without the incentive of wealth, no one wants to do it. Engineers will work on sexy projects like fighter planes and moon rockets for ordinary salaries, but more mundane technologies like light bulbs or semiconductors have to be developed by entrepreneurs.

Startups are not just something that happened in Silicon Valley in the last couple decades. Since it became possible to get rich by creating wealth, everyone who has done it has used essentially the same recipe: measurement and leverage, where measurement comes from working with a small group, and leverage from developing new techniques. The recipe was the same in Florence in 1200 as it is in Santa Clara today.

Understanding this may help to answer an important question: why Europe grew so powerful. Was it something about the geography of Europe? Was it that Europeans are somehow racially superior? Was it their religion? The answer (or at least the proximate cause) may be that the Europeans rode on the crest of a powerful new idea: allowing those who made a lot of money to keep it.

Once you're allowed to do that, people who want to get rich can do it by generating wealth instead of stealing it. The resulting technological growth translates not only into wealth but into military power. The theory that led to the stealth plane was developed by a Soviet mathematician. But because the Soviet Union didn't have a computer industry, it remained for them a theory; they didn't have hardware capable of executing the calculations fast enough to design an actual airplane.

In that respect the Cold War teaches the same lesson as World War II and, for that matter, most wars in recent history. Don't let a ruling class of warriors and politicians squash the entrepreneurs. The same recipe that makes individuals rich makes countries powerful. Let the nerds keep their lunch money, and you rule the world.
